Lines of research

The species that are the focus of GPMAI's investigations are the Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis) and the humpback whale (Megaptera novaengliae).

The scientific studies carried out by GPMAI fall into the following lines of research:

  • Ecology and conservation of aquatic mammals

  • Ethnoknowledge and anthropogenic interference

  • Animal behavior

Additionally, monitoring methods used in research include:

  • On-board visual monitoring

  • Fixed point visual monitoring

  • Acoustic monitoring

These methods are essential for collecting data on the behavior, distribution and ecology of the species studied, contributing to the conservation and sustainable management of aquatic mammal populations.
